So when we consume antioxidant foods or superfoods, they not just satisfy our hunger, they also play an important role in fighting off the damage that can be done to our immune system and cells by free radicals. There are some foods that have a great amount of antioxidant, and we are going to talk about the top antioxidant foods.

APPLES:

Flavonoid is a type of phenolic which is an antibiotic substance found in apples. People who consume more apples have a lower risk of stroke as opposed to people who eat fewer apples. Apples have also been proven to lower the risk of lung cancer, it aids in weight loss, and it also helps with viruses which do not live long in the presence of apple juice.

ARTICHOKES:

This vegetable is often overlooked as an antioxidant rich food and is often left off from the antioxidant foods list. Yet it was tested and proven and is ranked in the top eight of foods tested to have high antioxidant properties. Artichokes are found to reduce the risk of breast cancer, prostate cancer, and leukemia. It is beneficial to liver ailments, helps digestive system, a great source of fibre, and reduces high cholesterol.

BEANS:

Beans, especially kidney beans have a high level of antioxidant. A diet rich in beans can be used to reduce the risk of many cancers, lower cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, prevent and cure constipation, regulate functions of the colon and prevent piles and other bowel problems.

BERRIES:

Rank in the top three from our antioxidant foods list, described as "superfoods, berries such as strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. These berries have powerful antioxidant substances called proanthocyanidins which is very important to prevent the occurrence of heart disease and cancer. You can add your favourite berries to your cereal, yogurt or just eat them as a snack.

BROCCOLI:

Another from the list of superfoods, rich source of antioxidant and is said be the vegetable with the highest level of Vitamin C. Broccoli contains some disease-fighting chemicals known as phytonutrients which has been proven to lower the risk of many different types of cancers. Rank very high in the list of antioxidant foods, this is a perfect vegetable to add to your stirfrys, can be used as a side dish, in omelettes, or just steamed with your favourite starch added.

CARROT:

The nutritive chemical carotenoid is present in carrots, and it said to decrease the risk of heart disease and some cancers. Carrots also have an excellent source of Vitamin A. This sweet, crunchy vegetable has high fibre content and has been found that a substance called falcarinol found in carrots may help fight cancer and pre-cancerous cells and tumors.You can add your carrots to other vegetables and steam, you can use it as a side dish by itself, can be added to meats, used to make juice, or even in baking.

DARK CHOCOLATE:

Surprisingly, this is also on the list of antioxidant foods. Well, if you are a lover of chocolate, here's your chance to enjoy and still get great benefits. Flavonoids are present in dark chocolate which help lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol up to ten percent. The good news is, some of the fats in chocolate do not impact your cholesterol. Even though this is the case please consume not more than 100 grams of dark chocolate a day to get the benefits.

GARLIC:

A great spice for your food, garlic is another great food from the list of antioxidant foods. It is very commonly known and used for many health benefits. It contains Iron, Vitamins A,B and C, Iodine, Selenium, Magnesium, Potassium and Zinc. Garlic is a powerful natural antibiotic. It is also used to decrease high blood pressure, to treat high cholesterol, controls blood sugar, boost the immune system, as an antiviral agent, as an anti-fungal and it also reduces the risk of stomach, esophageal and colon cancer.

GREEN TEA:

Polyphenols which are phytochemicals with antioxidant properties are present in green tea. It has been proven to protect the body against cancer, regulates blood sugar and insulin levels, assist in weight loss as it helps burn fat, and reduces the clotting tendency of the blood.

TOMATOES

Tomatoes have a powerful anticancer agent called lycopene, which is one of the most common carotenoid in the human diet. Carotenoid is what gives tomato and other fruits and vegetables that yellow, red, and orange colour. Tomatoes have been proven to help with urinary tract infections, diabetes, lowers hypertension, is good for your eyesight and also promotes gut health. Tomato is also rich in vitamins and minerals which protects the heart from cardiovascular disease. You can use your tomatoes as a side dish, in salads, in cooking meats and vegetables and also blend as a juice.

Other foods with antioxidant properties are:

√ Vegetables (especially dark green leafy vegetable)

√ Fruits like orange, pineapple, grapefruit and kiwi

√ Nuts and seeds like sunflower seeds, pecans, walnuts, peanuts and hazelnuts (roasting of peanuts actually increase the antioxidant properties in it by up to 22% which would make it richer in antioxidant than apples and carrots.

√ Cereal such as oats, barley and corn

√ Spices such as cinnamon, cloves and oregano

Natural herbs such as peppermint and angelica
