Curry Powder

Curry powder, made using a mixture of more than one spices, adds a unique taste to your food. This spice is very popularly used in Indian and Caribbean cuisines.

The ingredients used to make curry powder varies, depending on the country you are from. The most popularly used ingredients are turmeric, fenugreek, coriander, cumin, garlic and ginger.


Other producers of curry may add other spices to their suit. No one or two of the spices mentioned above could create such a unique spice. Curry can be used on any meat and any seafood.

One of the main meat to use curry on is chicken. But it all depends on the country you are from and your tradition. Jamaicans will enjoy a dish of Jamaican curry goat any time, suitable for any occasion whereas people in other countries may find it strange to eat goat meat.

Some of the foods that are prepared with curry include ice cream, mangoes, breadfruit, cakes, ackee and salt-fish, scallop and jerk chicken.


Not only is curry a versatile spice to use on different foods, it also has some medicinal benefits that may interest you. This is so because it is made with a combination of different spices, all of which has different medicinal properties. Turmeric been the main spice in curry and is responsible for its yellow colour, has phenomenal health benefits, such as:

  • Turmeric, which is the main ingredient in curry has a main active ingredient called curcumin, it has been proven to lower the risk of Alzheimer's disease. This is also evident with the low rate of the disease in India where curry powder is popularly used in most dishes.
  • Recent studies on turmeric has shown that it has cancer prevention and treatment properties. Some of which are skin cancer such as melanoma and breast cancer, which has also shown to slow the spread of breast cancer to other parts of the body.
  • Curry is also known to reduce inflammation in the joints. It also helps to reduce the swelling in the joints.
  • In India, where curry is commonly used in many dishes, it is also used for the treatment of skin burns because of the turmeric in curry.

Scientist are still in the process of finding more medicinal benefits of curry. A great spice to add to your list of spices.
